How does wind speed link to the frequency of the wind? How does wind have a frequency?

I know how frequency of oscillation affects resonant frequencies, but how does the speed of the wind link to it? How does wind have a frequency?

  1. Wind usually isn't described in terms of frequencies. I suppose if wind varies, any function can be described in terms of Fourier modes, but I don't see how that's useful. Sorry....
  2. Frequency is the measurement of the number of occurrences of a repeated event per unit of time where as speed is the rate of change of motion they might be describing the speed of wind per unit time this is onlt possible way we can link frequency with speed
  3. Maybe the sound of the wind? I dunno
  4. I'm going to guess that what you mean by wind frequency is the frequency of strong gusts of wind. Like, on a calm day, the breeze may strengthen and weaken slowly, while in a storm, stronger gusts seems to come more frequently. Roughly, it seems like there is a positive correlation between wind speed and gust frequency. This link gives an introduction to what causes wind gusts: http://www.sciencenetlinks.com/sci_update.cfm?DocID=25 The problem with trying to understand local weather is that it is an open system, but some of the factors would be atmospheric pressure and temperature variations and local topology. This guy http://www.clarkson.edu/honors/research/papers/Dosiek-Luke.doc is working on modelling the wind "spectrum", which tells you, if you break down wind samples by frequency, how much power (or speed) is at each frequency. If you ignore the slow variations, it looks like (see Figure 1) typically, the wind speed will follow a bell curve distribution, with the biggest contribution coming at about one gust per minute. But the actual distribution will vary a lot based on local conditions.
